What you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S5

What you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S5

4/21/2014

The Samsung Galaxy S5, which hits stores on April 11, is receiving a considerable amount of praise from those who have gotten a sneak preview of it. Samsung's hardware innovation continues to be a strong point - Dr. Raymond M. Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies Corporation, asserted that the S5 has the "best performing smartphone display that we have ever tested."

Why techies love the S5's display
Like the Galaxy S4, the S5 has an OLED display. However, Samsung's newest model trumps the display features of its predecessor in a number of ways, according to Soneira.

"While many people have assumed that the Galaxy S5 has basically the same display as the Galaxy S4, but just a bit bigger, that isn't the case," Soneira said in his review of the product. "Our detailed lab tests show that there have been significant display performance improvements in almost every single test and measurement category, resulting in a number of new records for smartphone display performance."

Soneira noted that the S5 is 22 percent brighter than the previous model. He also lauded the S5's Cinema Mode, which provides the most accurate color display ever tested by DisplayMate. Meanwhile, the Adapt Display Mode features real-time adjustment processing based on the phone's surrounding lighting.

The impressive new features of the S5
In addition to its substantial display upgrades, the S5 is enhanced with greater speed and longer battery life, according to Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly. He reported that the S5 is equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 801 chipset and Adreno 330 graphics. These features enable a completely lag-free experience, in which apps open instantly and run exceptionally smoothly. In terms of battery life, Samsung claims that a fully charged S5 is capable of running 11 hours of video and 21 hours of talk time, Kelly noted.

Another standout feature is the S5's water resistance. The phone can withstand the effects of 20 minutes of underwater submersion. This means that S5 users will be able to take calls in the rain or while in the shower without worry.

While the S5's water resistance could be a life-saving feature for phones that take an accidental dive into a pool or sink, even the most durable phones should be backed by a comprehensive protection plan. Most cell phone insurance policies don't provide coverage from accidental damage, but ProtectCELL's device protection program does. It doesn't matter whether your smartphone has experienced a power surge, screen crack or complete submersion - ProtectCELL will have it covered.
