Talk-time: Smartphone users spend almost an hour each day on gadgets

6/18/2013

When it comes to technology, a good deal of Americans are practically addicted. We wake up and check our email, browse the Internet at work, play a game or two to cool down after a long day and chat with our friends and family constantly. Even just a few years ago, the world wasn't nearly as connected and technology-centric as it is today.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing. There are a lot of ways in which having more advanced tools like smartphones and tablets make our lives easier and more enjoyable. You can't really blame anyone for wanting to play around with their gadgets. But for the amount of time we spend using mobile devices, do we really do enough to keep them - and the information they contain - safe?

Plugged in
According to a new study for Experian Marketing Services' Simmons Connect mobile and digital panel, smartphone users love spending quality time with their devices. The report found that the average smartphone owner logs 58 minutes on his or her gadget every day. But what are they doing? Almost surprisingly, considering how deeply app love runs, the largest portion of that time is spent talking, at 26 percent. Texting takes up 20 percent, while social networking came in a close third at 16 percent.

But that isn't all. People spend 14 percent of that hour visiting websites, 9 percent checking email and 8 percent playing games. If you're keeping score, that leaves 9 percent of smartphone users' time for "other" activities.

When Experian pitted Android devices and Apple products against each other, some interesting differences arose. For instance, iPhone enthusiasts spend 26 more minutes on average using their gadgets, clocking in at about an hour and 15 minutes daily. Meanwhile, talk-time made up 28 percent of Android owners' use, compared to 22 percent for those with iPhones.

People using their phones for entertainment purposes isn't a new trend, though. In a 2012 survey of 1,055 people by mobile advertising firm InMobi, the company discovered that while people consume about nine hours of media each day, the lion's share of that use happens through their mobile devices. In fact, smartphones accounted for 144 minutes of time, even more than watching TV (141 minutes), using a computer (96 minutes) or listening to music (90 minutes).

Ready for anything
When it comes to mobile devices, people are definitely getting their money's worth from their purchases, at least in terms of use. But there's no better way to obliterate that than a smartphone meeting its untimely demise due to a drop, spill or other accident. It's clear that if you spend as much time on your phone as the average person, it would pay to keep device protection in mind. After all, even if you have a cellphone insurance policy, that's unlikely to be enough to cover you in every situation.

"People are constantly reaching for their device… to check on the kids, check their stocks, check if their boss is checking on them… to order tickets, cancel an appointment, schedule a money transfer… to find their way home or escape a million miles away," said Scott McLaren, chief marketing officer at ProtectCELL. "What if you suddenly got cut off from all that? I don't think there's a person out there who hasn't experienced the anxiety and stress associated with misplacing or damaging their cell phone or tablet. It's not only the device they're worried about, it's everything that goes with it. That's why ProtectCELL® lives by the words: Get Protected, Stay Connected and why we not only protect the devices that keep people connected, but what they're connecting to as well - all the deeply personal data, files and lists unique to each of us, much of it priceless and impossible to replace."

By getting a plan from ProtectCELL, you'll get the help you need from qualified specialists to get connected again, and with your most valuable data intact, too.
