Apple experimenting with larger screens for the iPhone, iPad

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is reportedly testing larger screen sizes for the iPhone and iPad. Based on information from unnamed sources who work at Apple's suppliers, the news provider stated the corporation may be looking into making a tablet that measures slightly less than 13 inches diagonally in addition to a smartphone larger than 4 inches. 

The news outlet noted that these tests could simply be routine and may not indicate that these larger models will someday hit shelves, as Apple regularly tests a variety of different designs during the development process. On the other hand, the news provider pointed out that Apple could be looking to regain ground on Samsung, which has been swiftly surpassing on Apple in terms of market share. One reason for this, the source stated, is that Samsung aims to offer a wide range of product sizes to ensure that there is a model that suits any user's unique needs. 

CNET noted that another way Apple may be able to significantly boost sales is by launching a low-cost iPhone, which experts have speculated is on its way. The source reported that Analyst Gene Munster believes if Apple rolls out a more affordable option sometime in the 2013 holiday season, iPhone sales may soar as high as 62 million, with 12 million units attributable to these less expensive gadgets. By comparison, experts anticipate that if the iPhone 5S launches during the second to last week of September, 24 million of the devices will have been sold for the September quarter.
