5 mobile tips for a greener lifestyle

5 mobile tips for a greener lifestyle

4/7/2014

The green movement is stronger than ever, and environmentally conscious individuals are doing everything possible to reduce their carbon footprints and make the Earth a safer place for future generations. Mobile technology has had a surprisingly profound impact on eco-friendly efforts across the globe.

In 2007, Chinese protesters texted the Xiamen government to voice their concerns about the health dangers posed by a petrochemical plant, Treehugger reported. Their efforts paid off, as the city's mayor put the facility on hold. Meanwhile, Indian farmers are using mobile phones to control the settings of irrigation systems remotely, which led to an improved water conservation system.

If smartphone owners are looking for new ways to go green, they'll be happy to know that their mobile gadgets can help. Here are five mobile-related tips for leading a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

1) Buy a green phone
There are several different factors that make certain smartphones greener than others. Some devices, like Samsung's Galaxy Exhilarate, are produced using an environmentally conscious process. Manufacturing Digital pointed out that 80 percent of the Exhilarate's composite stems from used mobile phone materials.

Mobile phones with energy-efficient charging systems can also be particularly green. The Exhilarate is one such device - its charger is platinum-certified by environmental standards set by UL, a global independent safety science company. Meanwhile, Micromax's X259 is exceptionally energy-efficient in that it runs on solar power. According to Manufacturing Digital, three hours of sunlight equates to 90 minutes of call time on the phone.

2) Use carpooling apps
Driving energy-efficient cars can help reduce carbon emissions, but carpooling in those vehicles bolsters environmental friendliness even further. Digital Trends suggested using Avego, a free carpool app available for Android, iOS and Windows phones. The app lets users find individuals headed to the same destinations and arrange plans to ride together. Passengers pay drivers their share of gas money, so all involved parties can cut down on their fuel expenses.

3) Track energy efficiency
Thanks to green-focused smartphone apps, individuals can track their energy consumption levels and find ways of becoming more efficient. Phone owners could benefit by installing VerdeEnergy or EnergySaver, two apps that help users conduct home energy audits.

Additionally, today's energy management software programs usually include mobile apps that let individuals adjust their home thermostats from remote locations. This could allow users to reduce both their energy consumption levels and heating bills.

4) Make eco-friendly shopping decisions
There are a number of mobile apps designed to help people become more environmentally friendly with regard to their shopping habits. Digital Trends highlighted GoodGuide, an app that keeps users informed about sustainable product options. With more than 170,000 U.S. products in its database, GoodGuide helps green-minded individuals find items that are safe, healthy and produced in a socially responsible manner.

5) Sell back used phones
Not only is selling back used devices a good financial move, it can also help facilitate eco-friendly phone manufacturing. If you have an old phone you're looking to sell, consider ProtectCELL's cell phone buyback program. Participants can receive up to 50 percent back on devices bought within the past year.
